Get Involved, Charity Walk

INTRODUCTION

We all face a growing crisis today with orphans & needy children without parents, with poor families, without provision and without love. Who can help? Who is to give them a hand? The charity run is part of an initiative determined to respond. Through this activity, we serve as a resource to benefit and keep the needy girls in schools by providing them with education, mentorship, and sanitary kits that help them concentrate in class during their menstruation period. “The theme of this year's Charity run is — Keep needy Girls in School” A first of its kind this year, it is aimed at getting people together in support of our girl’s hygiene in our society. We are collaborating with various churches, schools, NGOs, corporate companies in Kampala to hit our registration target of over 500 participants / runners this year. The event will be flagged off by the Kyabazinga of Busoga (Guest of Honor) and the US Missions Director in Uganda (Chief Guest / Runner) from Budhumbula at 9:00am through Rubaga, Buwenge Mpya then back to Budhumbula. Charity Run 2017 wants you to find your compassion for needy girls in our communities in Uganda.

JUSTIFICATION

Over the past decade or so, it has become increasingly evident that African girls are the most vulnerable with the fact that cultures used to consider them as bride material, inferiors hence denying them chances to education, leadership and so on. This created a society of imbalances and low women participation in the development of their communities. Another fact is that even those who could benefit from the government initiatives to skill or educate a girl child would drop out of school due to the lack of sanitary pads for menstruation. In Uganda where getting food on the table is the highest priority, sanitary pads become a luxury. Without hygiene supplies, girls stop going to school during their period and eventually fall behind and drop out.
This is because they become embarrassed without proper protection for their period. Considering all this, and because their dignity is important to us, we started a ‘’Save A Girl Initiative’’ a project aimed at preparing and empowering a female child for a bright future. The project provides them with access to: education, mentorship and Hygiene supplies including reusable sanitary pads. A portion of the proceeds provide financial support for single mothers to start a business. Currently, 22 needy/orphan girls are on our full sponsorship, and two of our supported girls graduated.
The Charity run thus, is organized in support of the Save A Girl Initiative’’ to solicit funds needed in educating our needy girls, buy sanitary (reusable) pads for over six hundred girls in the needy communities of Kamuli District and also help to fully setup our training centre in Namisambya Kamuli, equip it with sewing machines, to accommodate the training of young women on how to sew the sanitary products, a way on reducing on the annual high costs involved in buying the kits. The centre will be used also to provide counseling and mentorship to the girls.
The Charity walk will go along with celebrations to mark 10yrs of empowering young people and impacting communities in Uganda, launch of Yofochm Radio Uganda, launch of our charity magazine that will showcase all our work since 2018 and feature some of our potential partners. And at the end of day’s events, 5000 free copies will be given out to all our guests and participants.
